Sport

As part of the Founding Contract that ArcelorMittal signed, it agreed to continue to support all local sport organizations which are named after ’Miners’. These include: Football Club Rudar Prijedor, Ski Mountaineering Association„Ljubijski rudar“ and the Chess Club„Rudar“. As sports are an important part of Prijedor’s communities and helps to build civic pride, the company also supports Tennis Club „Mladen Stojanovic“, Basketball Club„Omarska“, Athletic Club Prijedor, Football Club„Omarska“ and the Veterans’ Handball Club.

FC „Rudar Prijedor“

Football Club „Rudar“was founded in 1928 within the Ljubija mining settlement, where the first iron ore mine was situated. Its first official football game was played in 1929. Ever since, the club has played in many championships and league cup competitions. The club has started its career from the lowest ranking and throughout many competitions they have reached the former Yugoslavian National League. FC „Rudar“played in the Second League in former Yugoslavia, where they played twice for qualification into the First League. In 1990, they reached the semi-final of the Yugoslavian football cup.

While playing in the Second League during 2007/2008, the club created a new generation of footballers, who made a big comeback to the first Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) League. At the end of season FC „Rudar Prijedor “, which now has its football pitch in Prijedor, won the championship which takes FC “Rudar- Prijedor“ to Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League. Each football game draws several thousand local supporters to the pitch in Prijedor. ArcelorMittal Prijedor miners and citizens of Prijedor appreciate their FC „Rudar-Prijedor“ and they are very proud of its success.

Ski Mountaineering Association „Ljubijski rudar“

The Ski Mountaineering Association „Ljubijski rudar“was founded in 1999. The Association counts over 90 active members and majority of them are workers of ArcelorMittal Prijedor. During 2008 the mountaineers have visited a large number of mountains in B&H and neighboring countries. Every year in order to mark Miners’ Day, the Ski Mountaineering Association organizes a hike called „Rudarska transverzala“.

The Ski Mountaineering Association „Ljubijski rudar“ has a Mountain house in Kozara mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a modern skiing resort with a 600m long ski lift. Every winter season there is traditional skiing school organized there with full skiing services. In their Mountain house the miners have created conditions that enable recreational activities for all workers, their families and all who love skiing and mountaineering.

Chess Club „Rudar“ Prijedor

The first Chess Club was opened in Ljubija mines in 1954. After a period of inactivity, the Club was reopened in 2001 and nowadays it takes part in competitions of the First RS (Bosnia and Herzegovina) League. The club has around 50 members, with the majority of them employees of ArcelorMittal Prijedor. The club has been very successful at the many municipal, republic and workers’ sports competitions. This year the members of CC „Rudar“, employees of ArcelorMittal Prijedor, won the first place at the 7th RS (Bosnia and Herzegovina) Workers’ Championship, which was held in Prijedor on November 14-15, 2008.
